This section documents a series of future-oriented design vignettes developed by CMU students in dialogue and collaboration with community members. They are inspired by Unangax̂ scholar Eve Tuck’s (2009) call for research that centers the “hope, the visions, the wisdom of lived lives and communities” — rather than narratives of loss or damage. We see design as a means to foster conversations about environmental justice and to collaboratively envision desired futures in Braddock, North Braddock, and neighboring communities.
Like the other spaces of this website, we look forward to further developing these vignettes and adding more through continuing collaborations and conversations. Through them we hope to draw out meanings, experiences, and possibilities within the urban fabric that exist outside of the narratives of boom and bust, and create opportunities to enhance community health, ecology, and power.
